All you need to know about learning theory, in one place

I make no claim to this piece of work. It is the work of Richard Millwood (Click here for his blog) while he was working on a project; the Holistic Approach to Technology Enhanced Learning (HoTEL). I believe the project has finished now, but this diagram is a really good summary of the variety of learning theories that exist. You can download a pdf copy from his blog.

As practictioners, it might be more learning theory than we will ever need, but I think it's a really useful document to have to hand during the learning design stage, because:

  • We can review our own preferences and biases.

  • We can widen our creativity in our designs.

  • We can look at learning from an individual, group or organisational perspective.

  • If we are adopting multiple approaches we can check if they are complementary or in opposition to each other.

It looks from their website that the HoTEL project finished around 2015, but there are some informative resources in the Repository section, that you might like to look at, for example the 2014 publication 'Mapping Theories, Technologies and Learning Practices' , which, way before COVID 19, was highlighting some of the issues that organisations face in dealing with complexity, particularly in the context of innovation.
